The fumes worsen and the flies buzz by the time Sally Hardesty wakens to find herself pinioned to an armchair with real arms, staring at a chicken’s head and feet nailed to a board, a dead armadillo, more animal bones, a human skull, and the semi-corpse of Grandpa sitting opposite her at a table spread that includes sausage (likely her ground-up friends) and an overhead lantern made from the skin of a human face. On the set, Chain Saw became a movie within a movie because the conditions, especially on that long night that bled into the following day, were so putrid and the indoor temperatures so high that cast and crew had to take periodic vomit breaks.
